WildWorks Joins United Nations Alliance to Combat Climate Change

New York City, NY – September 23, 2019 – WildWorks, a developer and publisher of massively multiplayer games for children and young adults, has joined the United Nations Environment Programme and 17 other leading game companies to announce the Play for the Planet Alliance at the UN Secretary General’s Climate Action Summit in New York on September 23, 2019. The combined efforts of Alliance member companies are projected to reduce atmospheric CO2 emissions by 30 million tons by 2030, and will additionally fund global reforestation efforts and promote best practices within the games industry to shrink the carbon footprint of game players as well as developers.

WildWorks CEO Clark Stacey outlined his company’s commitments at the UN Climate Action Summit today, an event hosted by UN Secretary General António Guterres and attended by CEOs from game distribution platforms including Sony, Microsoft, and Google Stadia; as well as leading game developers including Rovio, Supercell, Sybo, Ubisoft, and WildWorks.

“WildWorks is proud to join this alliance and help the games industry take a hard look at its impact on global pollution and carbon emissions. Our industry cannot shrink from this responsibility, but with it comes opportunity for collaborative research and action that will energize our development teams as well as our players,” Stacey told press and delegates to the UN General Assembly in New York City.

The video gaming industry is the biggest entertainment industry in the world, reaching 2.6 billion people globally. For the past six months, staff from the UN Environment Programme have been working with the industry to build the “Playing for the Planet Alliance,” a coalition of games industry leaders that will help the industry realize its potential for bold action to address climate change.

Speaking in support of this initiative, Stacey noted that WildWorks’ online game world for children, Animal Jam, has amassed over 100 million registered players worldwide; representing the next generation of environmental stewards. “The goals of UN Environment and the Playing for the Planet Alliance are very much in keeping with the ethos that drives the Animal Jam player community,” said Stacey. “Animal Jam has already contributed over $10 Million to conservation and environmental education organizations since it launched in 2010, and our free educational ebooks and video libraries continue to bring kids closer to their favorite animals and the ecologies they inhabit.”

The UN Climate Summit marked the official launch of the Playing for the Planet Alliance, whose 18 members have a combined audience of over 850 million players. Each company outlined its initial commitments to action at the launch event, which include carbon offsets for game servers and user devices, reducing plastic waste in physical packaging, development of educational games with conservation themes, and support for reforestation in critical regions to combat climate change.

For its part, WildWorks announced a commitment to plant a tree for every new Animal Jam member in partnership with WeForest; to incorporate new educational materials about habitat restoration and climate science into the Animal Jam game world; and to join peers in researching and promoting best practices for game development to reduce the industry’s carbon footprint.
